When hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be used
HBOT has established roles in a defined group of medical conditions. The appropriate setting and urgency vary considerably by diagnosis.
Recognized HBOT indications
This list is based on established hyperbaric medicine indications. Not every condition is routinely managed in an outpatient private clinic; some require emergency or hospital-based care.
Air or gas embolismAcute condition generally requiring emergency hospital-based hyperbaric care.
Carbon monoxide poisoningSelected cases may require urgent hyperbaric treatment.
Clostridial myositis / gas gangreneAdjunctive treatment alongside urgent surgical and antimicrobial care.
Crush injury and acute traumatic ischemiaSelected severe injuries when tissue oxygen delivery is compromised.
Decompression sicknessUrgent hyperbaric treatment for appropriate diving-related decompression illness.
Selected problem woundsIncluding certain diabetic lower-extremity wounds as part of comprehensive wound care.
Severe anemia / exceptional blood lossSelected circumstances when oxygen-carrying capacity is critically limited.
Intracranial abscessSelected complex infections managed with specialist hospital care.
Necrotizing soft-tissue infectionAdjunctive therapy; urgent surgery and antibiotics remain central.
Refractory osteomyelitisSelected chronic bone infection not responding adequately to standard treatment.
Delayed radiation injurySelected soft-tissue or bony injury following radiation treatment.
Compromised grafts and flapsMay help salvage selected threatened grafts or flaps.
Acute thermal burn injurySelected severe burns in specialized treatment settings.
Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing lossTime-sensitive adjunctive treatment in selected patients.
Central retinal artery occlusionA time-sensitive ocular emergency recognized in current hyperbaric practice guidance.
Avascular necrosisRecognized by current UHMS guidance; suitability and local treatment availability require assessment.

For physicians and other clinicians
Relevant records help determine whether HBOT is indicated and how it should fit into the overall plan of care. When possible, please include the diagnosis, specialist notes, relevant imaging, wound measurements or photographs, vascular studies, microbiology/pathology and current treatment.
